The 2014 edition of the State of the World Population, SWOP, report will be launched on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at the auditorium of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Alausa, Ikeja.
The report, which is annual publication of the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, focuses on emerging demographic changes on population and development and examines its implications on the development process.
Titled, The power of 1.8 billion: Adolescents, Youth and the Transformation of the future, the 2014 SWOP report draws attention to the fact that there is unprecedented 1.8 billon people between the ages of 10 and 24 in the World and that nine out of ten young people live in less developed countries. While underscoring the significance of young people as shapers and leaders of the future, it observes that young people face the challenges of limited access to education and employment, poverty, denial of sexual and reproductive rights and gender discrimination globally.
The report also focuses on key actions to be undertaken if the benefits of demographic dividends are to be realized. These include increased investment in young people’s human capital, expansion of access to contraception, increased employment opportunities and improve access to financial systems.
